For nearly 70 years, a cadre of Reno artists has practiced the ancient art of portraiture, immortalizing their subjects—often friends or neighbors—in oil, acrylics, watercolor, charcoal or pencil. Each Wednesday, the members of the Portrait Society of Reno spend about two hours in a room at Nevada Fine Arts focusing on a volunteer model. Their goal is not only to create a likeness of their subjects, but to capture some of the models’ personalities, character and emotions.

Incumbent Washoe County Commissioner Alexis Hill is facing challenger Marsha Berkbigler on Nov. 5 in the race for the District 1 seat. Berkbigler held the seat for eight years until Hill defeated her in the 2020 election. Berkbigler was a state lobbyist for more than 40 years, representing a variety of businesses. Those included mining, engineering, health care, insurance, telecommunications and nonprofit groups.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s failed efforts to reverse his defeat in the 2020 presidential contest, Republican officials in at least 21 counties across eight states, including in Washoe County, refused—or threatened to refuse—to sign off on voting tallies in 2022 and this year, potentially delaying results and setting the stage for denying the outcome of the November election.

Nevadans in November will vote on a ballot question aimed at enshrining abortion rights in the state Constitution, and will chose among slates of candidates who either tout their long-standing support of reproductive rights, or who are softening their previous—and more radical—positions on abortion. Democrats, most of whom have long championed access to abortion, are hoping the issue will bring more voters to the polls.

In the Republican primary for Washoe County Board of Commissioners District 4, incumbent Clara Andriola defeated Mark Lawson, who was endorsed by conspiracy theorist Robert Beadles, and Tracey Hilton-Thomas, who also had Beadles’ support. Andriola, who in 2023 was appointed to the commission by Gov. Joe Lombardo, has often been the swing vote on the five-member panel for election issues, including voting to certify election results.
