Parents who feel a book in their child's school is inappropriate could soon have a way of having it banned across the state. The Texas House Committee on Public Education will hold a hearing on House Bill 100, which could have the effect of getting a book banned by the state board of education. The way it works right now, parents go to their local school board with their concerns of inappropriate educational materials.

The casual voter registration drive in Texas may be about to get a lot more formal. On Thursday, a state senate panel will take up a proposal that would change what you would need to have with you when you register to vote. Technically, the change won't add any new requirements, just how you prove you meet them. The Senate Committee on State Affairs will consider Senate Bill 16, which would require a person who wants to register to vote to submit proof of citizenship at the time they sign up.

Beginning Thursday, a longtime Texas lawmaker will lie in honor in the Texas Capitol Chamber where he served for more than two decades. Texas is remembering U.S. Representative Sylvester Turner. Turner died suddenly last week after only recently taking office representing the historic 18th Congressional District in Houston. Before that, he had served eight years as Houston mayor. And all of that after being a state lawmaker. The 18th District seat was first held by noted stateswoman Barbara Jordan.

Turns out the big egg producers didn’t suffer nearly as much with the bird flu as their customers did.

The top five egg producers own roughly half of all U.S. laying hens. The biggest of those corporations is Cal-Maine, which just announced quarterly profits of $509 million — more than 3x what it made a year ago. Corporate concentration + bird flu = a price-hiking free for all.
