All is set as Lugazi Diocese prepares to host this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations slated for June 3 at the Catholic shrine in Namugongo, Wakiso District. Established 29 years ago, Lugazi Diocese was carved out of Kampala Diocese and last hosted the celebrations 21 years ago, in 2004. This year’s Martyrs Day celebrations will be celebrated under the theme, “Pilgrim of hope- Oh Lord, let me see again”.

Christians in Kayunga District have renewed their demand for a new diocese, separate from Mukono Diocese of the Church of Uganda. This campaign first began in 2020 but was dismissed at the time by the then Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt Rev James William Ssebaggala, who said the idea was just “excitement” by a section of Christians in the area. Bishop Ssebaggala, who is now retired, still believes Kayunga cannot support its own diocese.

On a cold Wednesday morning in the sleepy Bbaale Trading Centre, in the cattle corridor of Bbaale County in Kayunga District, five men ride into the milk collecting centre. Several workers are busy in the enclosure, sieving milk and pouring it into a large cooling plant. The five men offload jerrycans of milk from their mud-stained motorcycles. The milk is recorded, sieved, and poured into the cooling plant.

A plan by Kayunga District leadership to construct a Shs150 million modern canteen for district officials has sparked outrage with a section of district councillors opposing the "selfish" move. According to the plan, which the district finance committee has already approved, the luxurious canteen would save the district officials, including district councillors, the "shame" of eating from a makeshift restaurant, which is located near the district office block.
