A campaign to gather 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion has reached a very impressive milestone. Poppy Project administrator Wendy Fortier recently accepted close to 997 knitted and crocheted poppies from the Orléans based Busy Fingers knitting club, putting the number gathered so far at more than 4,000.

The Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) is considering widespread changes to its school boundaries, French immersion programming, grade structure and special education and to say parents are upset about what is being proposed would be a massive understatement. If adopted, the changes would effect more than 120 schools and effect nearly half of the board’s students in one way or another.

Dominique Vivier has won her second provincial curling championship in as many years. The Navan native combined with third Brooklyn Ideson, second Scotia Maltman and lead Clara Dissanayake to win the Ontario U20 Junior Women’s curling championship in Kingston last month. They are often referred to as fringe candidates, but alternative party candidates play a key role in providing largely disen-franchised voters with an option to cast their ballot outside the traditional parties. Voters in Orléans have four alternative candidates to consider when casting their ballot, including two independent candidates. Patricia Hooper is the local candidate for the New Blue Party of Ontario.

Ontario voters will be heading to the polls next Thursday to cast their ballot in the Feb. 27 provincial General Election. The most recent polls show a strong indication that Doug Ford’s Conservative government will hold on to power for a third straight term but with fewer seats than they held previously. The Conservatives could lose as many as a half dozen seats in ridings that were previously held by the Liberals.
