You want me to go where on what? That was my first reaction to seeing the mountain in Palm Springs, California and the tramway I was supposed to ride to its top. A somewhat precarious option for someone not all that happy about heights. But once safely enclosed in the tram which slowly ascended the apex, I was able to fully appreciate the surroundings, knowing there was even a more spectacular view awaiting me at the summit.

I vaguely knew that Thomas Jefferson had dispatched them to explore the Louisiana Purchase that he had just acquired from France in 1803. But not until I had taken an American Cruise Lines expedition of our own to the Snake and Columbia rivers in the Pacific Northwest did I grasp the awe and reverence with which they viewed their new historic discovery. And the inspirational journey that unfolded.

Well, those early hours to the joggers and those seeking an early start to catch their red snapper for dinner. But yes, the Malecon is a one-mile delight in so many different ways as to make any number of hours pass quickly. Mid-morning: Northern tip. The Hotel Rosita, built in 1948 and the oldest hotel in town, is seeped in history. It is the famous locale of the even more famous illicit liaison between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during the 1963 filming of The Night of the Iguana.
