US President Donald Trump announced on 11 March that he would impose a 50% tariff on some Canadian goods in retaliation for the 25% electricity tax levied by the Canadian province of Ontario on the US. Trump stated on TruthSocial that he had directed his commerce secretary to impose an additional 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports from Canada, following Ontario's 25% tariff on electricity entering the US. He said the tariff will take effect on 12 March.

Talks between the Ukrainian and US delegations on resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war have begun in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Iceland has transferred more than €2 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, bringing the country's total contribution to the fund to more than €5.6 million. The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine pointed out that during 2023-2024, Iceland made four tranches of contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. These funds were used to purchase equipment needed by fuel and energy sector companies in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has neither confirmed nor denied media reports about a planned visit to Moscow this week by Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East, to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The United States is opposed to using harsh language in joint G7 statements in order not to hinder its efforts to persuade Russia and Ukraine to come to the negotiating table. Reuters noted that G7 foreign ministers would meet in Quebec from 12 to 14 March.
