China’s commerce ministry said Saturday it has reviewed rare earths export licences applications and granted a “certain number” of permits, Kallanish reports. In a statement, a ministry spokesperson says the government will continue to reinforce approval of compliant applications for rare earths export permits. “China is willing to further strengthen export control communication and dialogue with relevant countries in this regard to promote convenient and compliant trade,” the spokesperson adds.

A team of salvage specialists and specialised equipment are expected to assist a vehicle carrier currently on fire in the Pacific Ocean on 9 June, Kallanish reports. The roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ship carrying 3,048 vehicles, including 70 all-electric and 681 hybrid vehicles, reported a fire on 3 June. All 22 crew members safely evacuated the ship on Wednesday, rescued by the Cosco Hellas crew, one of three good Samaritan vessels that responded to distress calls.

The European Commission published on Wednesday its first list of critical minerals strategic projects located outside of the EU, with 13 awards, Kallanish reports. The selected projects are located across the Americas, Africa, Europe, Central Asia and Oceania and require a capital investment of €5.5 billion ($6.3 billion). Complementing the 47 EU-based projects selected in March, the new developments will also benefit from facilitated access to finance and contacts with relevant offtakers.
