Montrealears are no strangers to orange cones. They even feel a sense of nostalgia when they travel outside the province and spot their symbolic cousins. In fact, the pedestrian object synonymous with road closures is so common in our lingo that the French dictionary Petit Robert will be adding the phrase "cône orange" to its 2026 edition. The cones will not be relegated to printed books and be forgotten, though.

Ten members of the Montreal police force (SPVM) will be cycling 1,000 km throughout parts of Quebec as part of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie to raise money and to inspire young people to stay away from a life of crime. Participating SPVM employees were at police headquarters Friday morning, in downtown Montreal, to unveil their goal and message to about 50 students from five high schools being sponsored as part of the cycling marathon.
