US investors awoke to a pandemic-like selloff in government treasuries as US President Donald Trump unilaterally implemented trade tariffs on imports into the world’s largest economy. The yield on 10-year US Treasuries spiked as high as 4.51% in US after-hours trading as the base trade kept unwinding, according to the Financial Times. The base trade refers to investors exploiting price inefficiencies between Treasury futures and the underlying deliverable cash bonds.

Maybe investors in US exceptionalism didn’t weigh the true cost and impact of increased import tariffs. This became apparent yesterday, when markets across the world sold off in response to US President Trump’s executive decision to impose a tariff of 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports, and an additional 10 percentage points on Chinese goods. Trump’s move was in line with campaign promises to bolster US-based manufacturing. Other promises included the reduction of corporate tax rates.

The local exchange-traded fund (ETF) market has seen a handful of transformative shifts since the Satrix 40 ETF first listed in November 2000. Two notable catalysts relate to offshore investing and the recent inclusion of active mandates. In 2017, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) released a circular effectively allowing for open-ended offshore investment for ETFs on a look-through basis, according to their prudential limits.
