Vernon city council advances land use dispute to Judiciary

The Vernon City Council has decided to escalate an ongoing dispute regarding the land use of Stay and Play the Cypress to the judicial system. This decision followed a special meeting where the council discussed the case in detail. City Attorney Michelle Blankenship had previously issued a cease-and-desist order against Stay and Play the Cypress on behalf of the city. In response, property owner Elizabeth Schmitz communicated her objections via email and presented her case at the special meeting.

Multiple localorganizations plan to celebrate the upcoming holiday with events and firework shows for this week. The Splash and Dash in Chipley, FL will be having their annual celebration and fireworks show on Jul 4, 2024. The event will have food trucks, games, live music, and more, all located at the T.J. Roulhac Enrichment & Activity Center in downtown Chipley. This event is free to the public and begins at 3 pm.
Disturbance leads to multiple felony charges for Chipley resident

A Chipley man was arrested on several felony charges after deputies responded to a disturbance call. Just before 5 p.m., July 1st, Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call requesting assistance after an argument developed into a physical disturbance while traveling back to the residence on Pinewood Dr. The victim stated once arriving back at the residence she exited the vehicle and called a family member about the situation.
John Hawkins arrested on multiple charges in Bonifay arson

The Bureau of Fire, Arson & Explosives, along with Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, has made a second arrest in connection to a February 2023 arson case in Bonifay. The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office executed the arrest of John Hawkins, father of Washington County commissioner Tray Hawkins, Tuesday, July 2, on multiple charges, including organized scheme to defraud, two counts of fraud, principle to arson, and giving a false report to law enforcement.
Active warrants result in arrests of two women in Washington County

Washington County, FL; June 28, 2024 — Two residents of Bonifay, FL, were apprehended by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on active warrants, leading to their incarceration. At approximately 11 a.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office investigators observed two females walking along Highway 90. One of the individuals, known to the investigators, was confirmed to have an active Washington County warrant for probation violation related to burglary charges.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two individuals following an investigation into multiple burglaries and grand theft incidents originating from Jackson County. This morning, deputies apprehended Ty Allan Infinger, 30, and Crystal Leanne Carnley, 34, both residents of Graceville, FL, on charges of grand theft and burglary. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation after a series of burglaries in the Graceville area.

Kent Smith Media recently announced the addition of Holton, who will serve the media company’s community publications, Washington County News and Holmes County Advertiser. Holton, a 2021 graduate of Poplar Springs High School, is a full-time student at Troy University, Dothan Campus, majoring in History Education.

Fire at the Arc building in Chipley: no injuries reported

On Wednesday, The Arc Building of Washington County and Holmes County, located at 1335 South Blvd, was the scene of flashing lights and smoke. At approximately 8:35 a.m., the Chipley Fire Department responded to reports of a fire and smoke at the facility. According to Chipley Fire Department Chief Hunter Aycock, the fire originated from a clothes dryer. The building was promptly evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Traffic stop leads to arrest of Vernon Man, Jackson Lee Haddock, on methamphetamine charges

A routine traffic stop in Vernon, FL resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man with an active warrant. Jackson Lee Haddock was taken into custody following a traffic stop conducted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. At approximately 10 p.m. last night, a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Silverado traveling on Highway 79 in Vernon.
