Gravity waves in the atmosphere are very different from gravity waves created by large stellar objects like black holes. In this case, gravity waves are waves in the atmosphere created by air flowing over or around things like mountains and in some cases, thunderstorms. These waves can occasionally be seen from radar and satellite by seeing their effects on clouds. You can think of it like ripples in a pond after a rock was thrown into it.

IOWA — Now that we're getting into the latter half of May, the planting season for many of Iowa's farmers is well underway. Across the state, we've been seeing excellent progress for most of Iowa's corn and soybean crops being planted. As of Monday, the USDA's Crop Progress Reports 91% of Iowa's corn crops being planted and 84% of the state's soybeans being in the ground. They are both nearly two weeks ahead of last year which is around six to 13% ahead of the five-year average.

Sometime soon, astronomers are expecting a star over 3000 light-years away to go nova any time now. When it does, this star will "reappear" in our night sky for the first time in nearly 80 years!T_CrB_NOVA -- Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Conceptual Image LabThe star in our sky is usually pretty dim and nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye. With a magnitude of only 10, for reference, the North Star has a magnitude of about 2.

You've probably heard the saying April showers bring May flowers, but does it actually hold true? The phrase itself dates back to the 16th century, from a poem describing England's cool, rainy spring and how it set the stage for blooming flowers in May. Over time became a way of saying that good things often follow gloomy days. Ideally, you need temperatures between 55 to 80 degrees and 1 to 2 inches of water for flowering plants.

EASTERN IOWA, Iowa — As it gets further into May, many people have probably started putting plants in the ground. It's hard not to after what's been a warm past few weeks. However, some may still be hesitant to plant so soon because of the old Czech legend of the three ice kings. The legend of the three ice kings may be well known in the Cedar Rapids area, as the legend was brought over by Czech immigrants who found Iowa's spring climate to be very similar to back home.
