For years, I’ve heard the familiar refrain: “America should be run like a business.”First, it came from the young Republicans at my small, conservative, undergraduate institution, advocating for Mitt Romney in 2012. More recently, it has become a justification for Elon Musk’s indiscriminate cuts to government spending alongside his team at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Donald Trump’s tariffs are wreaking havoc on the global economy while millions of Americans—including some of his own advisors—are furious. Even as many voters watch their retirement and education savings vacillate wildly, MAGA World maintains the president knows exactly what he’s doing—it’s just “the art of the deal,” they say. But as our new video explainer points out, history tells a very different story.

I want to make space for the idea that some people had well-intentioned gripes against DEI. Many were told that diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts had gone too far, and some people believed that Trump was simply making a good faith effort to rein it in, to curtail the abuses of “woke” gone unchecked. I think those people are very wrong, but it’s okay—we’ll agree to disagree.

At least that’s what the headlines scream. I spent the last few weeks reading the public statements, leaked internal memos, and listed changes from the organizations that are reportedly rolling back their DEI programs — corporate giants like McDonald’s, Meta, and Amazon — and what I found was a mismatch. Tomorrow is Election Day! And if you haven’t voted yet, Tuesday is the last day to cast your ballot. WRKF’s Capitol Access reporter Brooke Thorington spoke with Joel Watson, director of communications at the Louisiana Secretary of State Office, about what voters should and shouldn’t bring to the polls. Every election cycle, we hear the same old saying, “every vote counts.” While it may not always feel that way, in the case of last year’s sheriff election in Caddo Parish, that sentiment rang true.

What changes if more people showed up to vote? One answer emerges by comparing Minnesota and Tennessee—two states with vastly different voter turnout rates. Minnesota leads the nation, with nearly 80 percent of eligible voters participating in the 2020 election. With that, Minnesotans have elected leaders who have advanced a populr agenda: universal school meals, free public college tuition, paid family and medical leave, and the restoration of voting rights for formerly incarcerated people.
