    THUNDER BAY — A fire ban imposed in Conmee Township since early May is expected to be lifted in a matter of days, now that a new firefighting vehicle is coming into service. The municipality declared a complete ban on open burning on May 9th, and all existing fire permits were suspended until further notice. Conmee Fire Chief Robb Day said the township's pumper truck, which is almost 30 years old, experienced a breakdown during a mutual aid call with a neighbouring municipality.

    THUNDER BAY — A city cricket club is racking up quite a record at a tournament in northeastern Ontario. The Thunder Bay Lions won their third consecutive title on the weekend at the annual Mayor's Cup cricket tournament in Timmins. The Lions took the trophy over the host Timmins Tigers, the Sudbury Kings and the Thunder Bay Kombans. "This is a big success for us, and also for developing cricket in Thunder Bay," said club director Suresh Prajapati.

    THUNDER BAY — Property-owners around the city are receiving notices that they can expect to see a crew in their neighbourhood planting trees in the coming weeks. This year the city's forestry and horticulture section will plant just under under 1,000 trees of various species including northwood maple, Carolina poplar and many others. "We try to have some diversity, so that we don't end up with a monoculture of a single species," said Cory Halvorsen, manager of parks and open spaces.

    THUNDER BAY — Mother Nature's light show over Thunder Bay on Sunday night and Monday morning gave local photographers an opportunity to capture some impressive images. Environment Canada's monitoring station at the Thunder Bay Airport recorded almost 700 lightning strikes within a 50-kilometre radius. These included both cloud-to-ground strikes and in-cloud strikes.
