Mark Allen, whose six victories as Ironman World Champion earned him the nickname “World’s Fittest Man” from Outside magazine, will deliver the keynote address at UC San Diego’s all-campus commencement on June 14. The 67 year-old Allen earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at UCSD in 1980 and went on to a long career as triathlete, during which time he won the Olympic Distance World Championships in Avignon, France.

The famous mini research submarine Alvin arrived in San Diego on Thursday at the end of a mission in which its tiny crew witnessed the aftermath of a volcanic eruption on the seafloor while traveling 8,200 feet deep in the Pacific Ocean. The research vessel Atlantis brought Alvin to the dock that UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography operates in San Diego Bay. Scripps, whose scientists sometimes use the 3-person submersible, is helping service it.

An infectious disease expert from the La Jolla Institute for Immunology also was elected to AAAS, along with a number famous figures, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and author and political activist Gloria Steinem.

Roughly 200 non-tenure-track faculty members at the University of San Diego began a two-day unfair labor practice strike on Wednesday to express concerns about what they say are union-busting and mass course cancellations. The strike involved faculty in USD’s College of Arts and Sciences, one of the largest programs at the private Catholic university in San Diego’s Linda Vista neighborhood.
