IRELAND’S ANTHONY CACACE stopped his fellow former world champion Leigh Wood in the Englishman’s hometown of Nottingham to earn another signature win on a remarkable run at world level. Cacace [24-1, 9KOs] dropped and halted the hard-hitting Wood [28-4, 17KOs] in the ninth round at a sold-out Nottingham Arena, where local hero ‘Leigh-tal’ had previously stopped Cacace’s friend and fellow Belfast man Michael Conlan three years ago.

AIL DIVISION 1A club Terenure College RFC have appointed former All Blacks out-half Carlos Spencer as their new head coach. Spencer, who earned 44 caps for New Zealand between 1997 and 2004, will move to Dublin and steer ‘Nure on a three-year contract beginning this summer. Terenure chairman Paul Candon said that “Carlos was the outstanding candidate following our recruitment process”.

ATHLETIC CLUB WILL be missing three key attacking players for Thursday night’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford, with none of Nico Williams, Inaki Williams or Oihan Sancet having made the trip to Manchester. GALWAY DEFENDER DAITHÍ Burke will miss his county’s Leinster hurling championship meeting with Wexford at Pearse Stadium this Saturday after receiving a one-match suspension for his red card against Offaly. Burke was sent off for a reckless strike of the hurley on Offaly’s Brian Duignan after the half-time whistle had blown in Galway’s 2-25 to 1-14 victory in Tullamore two weekends ago.

MACK HANSEN WILL miss Connacht’s URC run-in after suffering an ankle injury that will keep him sidelined for five weeks. Hansen, who will hope to be included in Andy Farrell’s Lions squad on Thursday, would still be on track to feature in the pre-tour fixture against Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on 20 June provided he doesn’t suffer any setbacks in his recovery.
