Excavation work on the Italian portion of the Brenner Base Tunnel, slated to become the world’s longest railway tunnel, has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the cross-Alpine rail project. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) named “Flavia” successfully bored through the Alps beneath the Mules 2–3 section, reaching the Austrian border. This follows the completion of the east main tunnel in 2023 and takes overall progress on this section to over 95%.
