Mourners are being asked to wear a “splash” of blue as they say a final goodbye to a Wigan teenager. Details have been published of the funeral for 19-year-old Jamie Highton, who died on April 26 during a fishing trip in France. Moving tributes were paid following his sudden death and thousands of pounds have been raised in his memory. R Banks and Son funeral directors announced a funeral service will be held at 11am on Thursday, June 5 at St Matthew’s Church in Highfield.

A woman is waiting to find out her punishment for attacking two emergency service workers in one day. Jessica Renshaw, 30, of Gort Lane, Atherton, pleaded guilty to assaulting the police officers by beating them on April 12. She also admitted failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis when in charge of a vehicle on the same day. Wigan justices adjourned the hearing until August 5 so a pre-sentence report could be prepared. Renshaw was remanded on unconditional bail.

A Wigan borough man has been accused of breaching the requirements of his football banning order. It is alleged that Lewis Bennett, 21, of Beckside, Tyldesley, did not surrender his passport for England matches against Finland and Greece in October and November. Countless thousands of Wigan youngsters have enjoyed holidays in the Lake District thanks to Hinning House and Low Bank Ground. The two outdoor education centres are in Cumbria and have been hosting school trips for decades. Low Bank Ground, on the shores of Coniston Water, has been owned by Wigan Council since 1983, while Hinning House, in the Duddon Valley near Scafell Pike, has been a council-owned property since the 1970s.
