Two weeks ago the Harrisburg baseball team was still having trouble getting over the hump having flirted with the .500 mark, but only making it over just once since the first game of the season before falling back with a loss to Carterville, but since then the Bulldogs have found their bite winning seven in a row including three last week with two coming by last inning rallies. “We’ve been pretty good at making late inning rallies lately,” said Harrisburg coach Jay Thompson.

The Marion baseball team came into last week riding high on a 10-game winning streak, but the Goreville Blackcats snapped the streak with a 7-6 win and the Harrisburg Bulldogs were rude hosts beating the Wildcats, 8-3, to end the week with two losses. “We haven’t lost two games in a row since the first week of the season,” said Marion coach Kyle Geiger. “What it came down to in both games was one bad inning. It’s always interesting playing Harrisburg.

The offense was clicking and the pitching this early in the season was good enough for the Marion baseball team to win three of its four games it was able to play last week to snap a modest two-game losing streak by winning by an average score of 9-3 to up its record to 4-3, including 12-2 over Herrin Thursday.

Last year the Harrisburg baseball team was one of the best in the state finishing the regular season with a 28-5 record with a team that was strong at the plate, strong in the field and even stronger on the mound, but the Bulldogs ran into an excellent Johnston City freshman pitcher in the first round of the regional and was knocked out by a 4-0 score. “We were a good team, solid up and down the batting order,” said Harrisburg coach Jay Thompson.
