MAHANOY CITY — In the beginning, it was all Mahanoy Area. But the Golden Bears’ 58-44 victory over District 4 third-place Northwest in a PIAA Class AA boys’ basketball first-round game Saturday afternoon wasn’t as easy as the final score looked. After jumping out to a 17-2 lead halfway through the first quarter, it was raining threes inside Mickey Holland Gymnasium. Mahanoy Area (28-0) started 3-for-3 beyond the arc, with Chris Cuff getting things started on his team’s first possession.

NEW TRIPOLI — Grace Brennan had a game-high 12 points, as Nativity shocked Bethlehem Christian 41-38 in the District 11 Class A consolation game Saturday morning at Northwestern Lehigh High School. The senior point guard helped lead an exciting fourth-quarter comeback victory, in which Nativity (7-17) trailed the entire game and entered the final quarter down seven. With 3:40 remaining in the game, Brennan found Emmalee Pinkey for an easy layup to tie the score at 35.

Keera Brennan wore many hats Friday night for the Minersville girls’ basketball team. The senior guard pulled down rebounds like a forward, grabbed steals like a guard and knocked down clutch free throws like a skilled marksman. Not taking a play off, her persistence and relentless attitude were driving forces in Minersville’s 55-49 victory over Northern Lehigh in the District 11 Class 2A championship game at Martz Hall.
