SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Thursday, June 19th, is Juneteenth, a federal holiday that marks the day when the last enslaved Americans were finally freed nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day that celebrates the completion of freedom for every American citizen. In Savannah, that freedom was honored with the second annual Juneteenth Walk to the River. If you drove along MLK Boulevard on Thursday, you could see a large crowd walking down the street.

They’re coming to take part in bridging Savannah’s bridge, one of the most colorful and meaningful Girl Scout celebrations. “Bridging Savannah’s Bridge” — which symbolizes moving up one level of scouting to the next –is a proud tradition of sisterhood and growth.

The Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization hosted its annual Juneteenth wade-in, which honors young black activists who risked arrest to desegregate the beach. WSAV spoke with members of the Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization to learn more at the beach on how today is more than a ceremony, it’s a step into history.

POOLER, Ga. (WSAV) – Time is running out for a Pooler food pantry that’s served the community for more than 15 years. They’re still searching for a new home after a local church decided not to renew their space. It was a difficult decision for volunteers and organizers to hear. After a meeting last week with Pooler First Baptist Church, they were told they need to vacate the space by June 30th. This provides them a few weeks to relocate or shut down.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Monday, Mayor Van Johnson is stepping up to the plate with a new initiative designed to bring baseball – and fun – to Savannah’s youngest residents. Normally, you see the Savannah Bananas at Grayson Stadium, but today you’ll see a new face on the field. Mayor Johnson is stepping up to the plate today. He will be giving local kids the chance to learn baseball, and maybe even learn a few dance moves on the diamond.
