But it also highlights a wider issue of how the government buys goods and services. We now learn that the government knew in 2016 that the Post Office had pulled a covert investigation that could have allowed sub-postmasters accused of theft or fraud to prove their innocence.

Sunday 11 February marks Women in Science Day. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly to encourage the fully inclusive equal access and involvement of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This occasion is observed annually and also serves to promote a vital aspect of the UN’s sustainable development goals.

On 28 November 2023, before a conference audience representing countries of migrant origin, transit and destination, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen launched a Global Alliance to Counter Migrant Smuggling. This is a major policy initiative not just within the EU but with an intent for global cooperation to put an end to what von der Leyen described as the “criminal business” of smuggling human beings.

If a problem had a simple solution, it would never become a serious problem. The solution would quickly be applied and the problem would be solved. Populists know how attractive this can sound. They gain power by claiming they have simple solutions to problems that worry people. Often these ‘problems’ are created by the populists themselves, aided and abetted by a client media. A classic example is immigration in the 1980s.

Even after the black summer Australians have just endured, it's not bushfires that's keeping the nation's insurers awake at night. Climate change is bringing cyclones further south - towards highly populated areas like Brisbane, the Gold Coast and northern NSW. Insurers are warning that unless the Federal Government takes drastic action, parts of the country may even become uninsurable.
