Magnetic null points are an important aspect of the magnetic field structure of the solar corona and can be sites of enhanced dissipation. This paper uses analytical and numerical models to investigate the plasma structure around a heated null. It is shown that the temperature profile not only differs significantly from that in a uniform field, but also that the profile depends significantly on the spatial structure of the heating.

X-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) often displays complex and rapid variability, which may provide a glimpse into the detailed thermal and dynamical structure of the accreting gas near the event horizon of the central black hole. The observed variability can be analyzed using Fourier transforms of the light curves in multiple energy channels, which can be used to generate Fourier phase lags, corresponding to lags in the time domain.

Disparities in maternal-child health outcomes by race and ethnicity highlight structural differences in the opportunity for optimal health in the United States. Examples of these differences include access to state-level social policies that promote maternal-child health. States vary in their racial and ethnic composition as a result of the complex history of policies and laws related to slavery, Indigenous genocide and relocation, segregation, immigration, and settlement in the United States.

The two strands of the DNA double helix locally and spontaneously separate and recombine in living cells due to the inherent thermal DNA motion. This dynamics results in transient openings in the double helix and is referred to as “DNA breathing” or “DNA bubbles”. The propensity to form local transient openings is important in a wide range of biological processes, such as transcription, replication, and transcription factors binding.

Most Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the local universe are obscured. In these obscured AGN an excess is usually observed in the soft X-rays below ∼2 keV above the absorbed X-ray continuum. This spectral component is associated with the scattering of X-ray photons off free electrons in the Narrow Line Region (NLR), and/or to photoionised lines. Recent studies have found that in highly obscured AGN this component has lower flux relative to the primary X-ray continuum than in less obscured AGN.

We investigate the X-ray variability properties of Seyfert 1 Galaxies belonging to the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). The sample includes 151 unobscured (N < 1022 cm−2) AGNs observed with XMM–Newton for a total exposure time of ∼27 ms, representing the deepest variability study done so far with high signal-to-noise XMM–Newton observations, almost doubling the number of observations analysed in previous works.

As molecular ecology expands to include whole genome sequencing (WGS), the congruence between genetic and genomic methods has been called into question (McCartney-Melstad et al. 2018; Zimmerman et al. 2020). Rather than discrete categories, genetic and genomic methods form a spectrum across marker type, number of loci, and technologies used to generate data.

This paper explores the speed of rulemaking in American state governments. Drawing on a unique data set of over 250,000 individual rules issued by states from 1993 through 2009, we introduce new measures of the speed and breadth of rulemaking in American state bureaucracies, providing a new way of evaluating the incidence of rulemaking delay within and across governments.
