With temperatures reaching below -50°C and winds reaching over 100km per hour, the frozen desert of Antarctica is one of the harshest environments on Earth. Despite these conditions, life finds a way, with thousands of penguins calling this icy world their home. But with the pressures of climate change continuing to mount, researchers are braving the Antarctic wilderness to understand the impacts on the lives of these iconic flightless birds.

On moving to Fountain Hills a decade ago, I was surprised by the level of vitriol in community politics. I remain baffled. The bitter narrative fostered by a segment of the community’s residents stands in inverse relationship to the actual challenges faced by our elected officials. While Mayor Ginny Dickey and I likely will vote differently on most (all?) candidates on the November ballot, those differences are irrelevant when it comes to local and largely nonpartisan matters.

If it wasn’t for work and my concern for people I know, I have to admit, I’d be tempted to switch off the news. The stories coming out of both Israel and Gaza are beyond comprehension. In Israel we have learned just how brutal Hamas were to innocent women and children. It’s too graphic to go into detail. The men who did this are not human beings. Inside Gaza, we have seen the Al-Ahli hospital being hit. Almost 500 are said to have died. Hamas blames an Israeli air strike.

Israel and Gaza, it usually goes something like this…Rockets are fired from Gaza. Dozens, maybe even hundreds over some days. Israel then hits Gaza with a barrage of precision strikes and takes out Hamas targets. Tragically, civilians often die. Back and forth for a few days, then it stops, often as quickly as it started. Hamas claims success, Israel claims success. It all dies down, goes quiet, then kicks off again a few months later. Wash, rinse, repeat.

“Surely you must have been scared of walking the streetsof countries you’ve been in?”I’ve been asked this countless times, and, without bravado, my answer is always no. No, when it comes to the general population. I have spent months each year in broken, poor and often war-torn countries, but the people in general, be it in the West Bank or Iraq, or even the highly dangerous Gaza Strip, are immensely welcoming.
