Producer says get ready for Jafaican laughter

LONDON: Fredi Nwaka, the UK-based writer, director and producer, is excited about his new film Jafaican which is set to hit UK cinemas on May 20. The title, which has a spin on ‘Jamaican’, is mainly because the storyline is about a small-time London crook, Gary Buckle (played by Peter Andre), who jets off to Jamaica to pull off a high-stakes heist and gain some money to take care of his nan (grandmother). Philanthropist to host eye clinic in Jamaica

LONDON: London-based Jamaican philanthropist Captain Lesa Thomas is again giving a helping hand to her parent’s home land by partnering with local eyecare/eyewear provider, EyeQ Opitcal Ltd, in a project to benefit some 300 children in St Catherine. The commercial aircraft pilot is to this week set up the clinic with local based ophthalmologist and optician specialists to begin testing students of Guys Hill Primary School in St Catherine as of Thursday, May 8.

LONDON: Dr Neville Lawrence, father of Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in a racist attack in April 1993, has called for David Norris, one of two men jailed for his murder to name the others involved. This comes after a Parole Board report claims that Norris admitted to being in the gang of white thugs who attacked 18-year-old Stephen on the night of April 22 at a bus stop in Eltham, southeast London.

LONDON: Health advocate Anthony ‘Tony’ Kelly has been awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Warwick University for his years of voluntary work in raising awareness of diabetes and prostate cancer, two of the leading diseases that affect the black community. The honorary doctorate was conferred on Kelly last month at the winter graduation ceremony at the university campus in Coventry.

Leading the awardees was Jamaica-born poet, academic and campaigner Linton Kwesi Johnson, who was awarded the coveted Platinum award for his over five decades of literary and music activism on the black British experience of racial injustice and oppression.

LONDON: Victims of the 2017 Windrush scandal received some welcome news last week after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans for a fundamental reset in the government’s response to those affected. In a special roundtable meeting at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton, south London, with stakeholders and legal representatives for persons directly affected by the scandal, the home secretary expressed the government’s renewed commitment to work to achieve justice for the victims.
