Energy Spend Set to Surpass $3 Trillion in 2024 By Georgia Gratton June 7, 2024 - Global energy investment this year is on track to exceed $3 trillion, around $2 trillion of which will be "clean energy" financing, twice the amount being spent on fossil fuels, energy watchdog the IEA said today. The IEA defines clean energy as renewables, electric vehicles, nuclear power, electricity grids, storage, heat pumps and "efficiency improvements".

The UN Cop 28 climate summit closed last week in Dubai with what many hail as a historic agreement from nearly 200 countries — to transition away from fossil fuels. It is the first time language around curbing all fossil fuels has appeared in a Cop outcome text, but many were disappointed that it did not go further in calling for a full phase-out.
