UK Most Fix Carbon Market to Incentivize CCUS

March 14, 2024 - The UK must overhaul its carbon market, delivering a strong and long-term price signal to achieve the government's goal of a "self-sustaining and competitive" carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) sector, think tank Carbon Tracker said today.
Carbon Tracker assessed the role that CCUS could play in the UK's transition to its legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050.

The head of the UN's climate body has called on countries to clear "tactical blockades" to reach a meaningful deal on tackling climate change at the UN Cop 28 conference in Dubai. A new draft text for a possible agreement will be published shortly, UNFCCC executive secretary Simon Stiell said in Dubai. "The areas where options need to be negotiated have narrowed significantly," he added.

Just 5pc of companies analysed by investor research group Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) quantify how they will meet their greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. And most firms are also failing to align their decarbonisation plans with future capital expenditure (capex) or clarify how they will use carbon offsets. This September was the warmest on record globally, following on from the hottest summer, putting the world on track to record its warmest year ever, EU earth monitoring service Copernicus said. The world's surface air temperature averaged 16.38°C in September, Copernicus data show, which was 0.5°C higher than the previous record in September 2020. The temperature was 0.93°C above the average for the month from 1991-2020 and about 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels.
