Calum Keaveny scored a magnificent 2-3 as Kildare defeated Meath in Tullamore to lift the McGirr Cup for the second successive year. Athy’s Keaveny scored his first goal with the first score of the game after three minutes and then his second late in the half to help Kildare into a 2-7 to 0-3 lead at the break. Kildare had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half but into the face of that, had to defend resolutely early in the second half.

There was a moment where Kildare’s season teetered on the brink of disaster. After seeing a 13 point lead whittled away by Westmeath, the scores in Round 2 of the group stages were level with just five minutes remaining. This was just a week after Kildare had conceded the last five points to lose by a point to Kerry. It was Kildare’s tenth game across three separate McDonagh Cup campaigns and they had lost in all previous nine attempts, including that gut wrenching defeat to Kerry.

It almost doesn’t bear thinking about but it is worth considering as it’s a testament to Kildare’s quality and professionalism. The team knew that three successive wins in the McDonagh Cup put them on the brink of a final ahead of the final group game against Down. Kildare knew it was their own hands and a win would secure a place in the Croke Park but in the event of a loss, only a draw between Carlow and Laois would deny them.

Carlow manager Mikey Mangan was at a loss to explain why his team were so far from their usual selves against Kerry in Tralee last Saturday afternoon. After a successful Leinster campaign, there were high hopes that Carlow could make a real impact in the All-Ireland series but the team were miles from the standards that they would usually set for themselves. “Kerry were by far the better team on the day,” agreed Mangan.

Brian Flanagan has made four changes to the team that started last day out against Tipperary for Sunday’s Tailteann Cup table topping clash against Sligo in the Hyde Park, Roscommon. Mick O’Grady, who was replaced at half time during that win over Tipperary after picking up a knock, doesn’t make the matchday squad and his place at wing back is taken by James McGrath.

Kildare score goals they win games! Of the last 30 league & championship games in which they have scored 1 or more goals, they've won 24. Of the last 25 games when drawing a blank in front of goal they've won just 5. That win over Offaly feels like a huge one.

The weather has done it’s best to put a dampener on the occasion but it’s great to see the Kildare hurlers playing in front of such a crowd here in Newbridge, hopefully a sign of things to come
