Alex Beirne scored 12 points as Kildare brushed off their Leinster Championship disappointment by strolling to the most facile of victories at a sunny Cedral St Conleth's Park in the opening round of the Tailteann Cup. Any lingering hangover from the Leinster semi-final defeat to Louth was blown away as Brian Flanagan's men turned in an exhibition of shooting on a perfect evening for football.

It was the thoughts of days like this that persuaded Joe Murphy to swap chasing Kildare and Leinster titles with Naas and come home to lead his native county. The smile on his face after the final whistle in Brewster Park told it’s own story. “I'm a fierce proud Carlow man. If I can add anything to the development of Carlow football, I'm very honured to do that. To stand with these guys today and see them get a really good win in a tough environment, I'm very proud at the moment,” said Murphy.

Former team captain Darragh Foley returns to the Carlow team for Sunday's Tailteann Cup tie in Brewster Park against Fermanagh, (throw in 2pm). The Kilbride man brought the curtain down on a record breaking intercounty career at the end of last season but has been tempted back into the fray by new manager Joe Murphy.

Kildare manager Brian Flanagan has made a number of changes to his team as he looks to reinvigorate his side ahead of the Tailteann Cup. The Lilywhites start with a home tie against Leitrim on Saturday at 5pm and among the changes is the very welcome sight of Jimmy Hyland returning to the starting line up.

Kildare manager Brian Dowling has named the same 15 players to start for the daunting prospect of the visit to Carlow on Saturday afternoon. Last time out, Kildare recorded their first ever Joe McDonagh Cup win over Westmeath so it's no surprise to see Dowling going with the same personnel.

RIP to the great Micko and condolences to his family. Now that St Conleths has been redeveloped, there really should be a permanent reminder of the incredible days he brought to the county, whether that be a statue or naming a lounge or stand after him, it would be fully deserved
