Kildare’s wait for a win in the McDonagh Cup goes on but they are unlikely to get much of a better opportunity for that first win than this after Kerry scored the last five points of the game to stage a real smash and grab victory at Cedral St Conleths Park. After going winless through the 2021 and 2023 campaigns in this competition, Kildare were lacklustre through the first half but were much improved after trailing 1-7 to 0-9 at half time.

Kildare manager Brian Flanagan praised the Leinster Council’s decision to give teams home advantage in the Leinster Championship quarter-finals and to take the semi-finals out of Croke Park after his team qualified for the last four by beating Westmeath in front of a packed Cedral St Conelths Park on Saturday evening.

Mark Dempsey is the surprise inclusion in the team named by Brian Flanagan for his first Leinster Championship game in charge of Kildare for Saturday evening’s game in Cedral St Conleths Park against Westmeath. The 26-year-old Moorefield man made 22 appearances for Kildare between 2018 and 2021, including 11 in the Championship, and was a mainstay in the Kildare defence during the 2019 and 2021 seasons in particular.

RIP to the great Micko and condolences to his family. Now that St Conleths has been redeveloped, there really should be a permanent reminder of the incredible days he brought to the county, whether that be a statue or naming a lounge or stand after him, it would be fully deserved
