Opera Saratoga will take an adventurous step over the next few weeks by staging two new operas — one of them in an unconventional setting. The first is “In a Grove,” slated May 28-29 at the Ferndell Pavilion in Saratoga Spa State Park. The other is Irish composer Emma O’Halloran’s “A Mass for Women in Bathrooms” set for June 22 and June 27 at Universal Preservation Hall. kAm“x H2D H@C<:?8 H:E9 4@>A@D6C r9C:D r6CC@?6 2?5 =:3C6EE:DE $E6A92?:6 u=6:D49>2?? 7@C D6G6? All were created by 39 members of the guild.

Saratoga Voices artistic director Noah Palmer decided to challenge his 75-voice chorus — and himself — for the group's Saturday concert at Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College. “Except for one piece, it's all new for me and new for the group,” he said. The program, titled “Mystical Masterpieces,” comes initially from Ralph Vaughan Williams' “Five Mystical Songs” (1911). The work for baritone, chorus, strings and piano is based on George Herbert's 17th-century metaphysical poetry.

The Hudson-Mohawk Chorale opted for a different approach for its Sunday afternoon concert at the First Reformed Church of Scotia. Instead of celebrating spring, director Susan Hermance Fedak chose a program with the title “The Voice of Eternity” geared toward contemplation and reverence with the large crowd asked to listen to the music for a solid sixty minutes and then applaud.
