I have noticed a growing number of notices being posted in public spaces where employees and staff interact with the public. The ones I have seen basically have the following points — the business or service organization states it is committed to providing a safe environment and this includes treating everyone with respect and dignity. It is stated clearly that physical violence, threatening behaviour and abusive language are not tolerated. Some statements give more examples and others give less.

We begin a new year at a time when our country and world face many challenges. When we are faced with so many significant issues, it is easy to become discouraged. Given this reality, it is quite significant the Catholic Church is celebrating a Holy Year in 2025. It began in St. Peter’s Basilica on Christmas Eve. The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope” and that is precisely what the world needs at this moment.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour created quite a stir in Toronto. It is now over, and many were grateful for the opportunity to see this talented entertainer in concert. The city of Toronto was also thankful for the millions of dollars it generated for the local economy. There is no question that a great deal of time and effort were put into preparing for the coming of Swift. Many Christian churches have now begun the liturgical Season of Advent.

On Nov. 26, 2007, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared that beginning on Feb. 20, 2008, a World Day of Social Justice would be celebrated annually. The General Assembly acknowledged there will never be peace and security in the world if there is no justice. Human rights and fundamental freedoms need to be respected within and among nations. The United Nations believes advancing social justice should be the central aim directing all nations and international policies.
