A gas leak has forced 14 homes to be evacuated in a Warwickshire town. People were asked to leave their homes in Evesham Street, Alcester, on Tuesday after a smell of gas was reported to Cadent. The gas company said the leak had been fixed but operatives would stay on site until residents returned home. Dave Tucker said he returned home on Tuesday evening to find "blue flashing lights and emergency vehicles on the street".

The regulator of a landfill site where noxious gases give off a foul stench has said it has received more than 760 complaints in one day. Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, Staffordshire, was served a closure notice in November after the Environment Agency (EA) said there was a risk of "significant long-term pollution". Some residents have linked pollution there to instances of ill health in the area, leading to years of protests, legal rows and EA scrutiny.
