During Financial Literacy Month is a good time to take an intentional look at your finances and your spending habits. Think about it, if you shave off a few dollars each month that you spend needlessly, it could lead to the funds you are looking for to take the trip you want to take. I didn't think I had much free time to add a financial literacy project into my week, but it has proven to be worth it.

Thelma "Tot" Lampkin Meeks turned 100 years. She was born on January, 31, 1925. She was born in the City of Inkster. She was given the nickname Tot because she was so small. She tried to grow, but it didn't happen. She was the smallest one in the family of nine children. She graduated from Inkster High School in 1947. She was employed as a shoe shinner at the Black Owned Barber Shop - Lamkins Barber Shop. She also worked for University of Michigan Hospital. Her pay scale was under $10.00 as a Nurse Aide.

As we celebrate Valentine's Day people are looking for ways to say I Love You. Just realize that there are many Free ways to accomplish this goal. The most common way to say I love you is to simply make a phone call. Call the people you love and talk to them. If you feel that you must send a text message, do it. But talking to a loved one is the most cost effective and personal way to say I love you. Another way is to do a chore for that person that can't get around.

What do you do when something is going on in your community? Do you speak out? Do you investigate the situation? Do you talk it over with any of the community activists in your neighborhood? Well those are some steps that must happen to let the corporations or elected officials know that you are paying attention to what is going on. Notice of Public Hearings must be published in your local newspaper. The Telegram Newspaper is one source of those public hearings.

Thanksgiving is a time to think about what you are thankful for. Many families have a part of the Thanksgiving dinner time to go around the table and have each person say what they are thankful for. It's normally an eye opening experience as people share things that you had no idea were important to them. It's always exciting to hear what the children are thankful for. As they mature their list of things that they are thankful for expands.
