Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has laid the keel of the third next generation offshore patrol vessels (NGOPVs) in a fleet of 11 being built for the Indian Navy. GRSE and Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) are sharing the building of the fleet, with GSL building seven vessels and GRSE just four. The fleet has a programme value of US$1.2 billion, giving each vessel an estimated unit cost of $108 million.

Thales has signed a deal with Naval Group to supply the sonar suite for the Orka-class diesel-electric submarines that will make up the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Walrus replacement programme (WRES). The four-vessel Orka class will replace the Netherlands’ Walrus-class submarines, which were built in the 1980s and 1990s, with the commissioning of the first of the class being delayed until 1990.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) has commissioned the fourth of its Awaji-class mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels in Yokohama City. Built as an improved variant of the three-vessel Hirashima-class which entered service with the JMSDF in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the Awaji-class will actually replace the ageing Yaeyama-class minesweepers built in the early 1990s.

Exail has signed a contract with UAE-based Edge Group entity ADSB and the TII to develop new autonomous mine countermeasure (MCM) solutions which will be built domestically in the UAE. As part of the collaboration, ADSB has launched the 170 M-Detector vessel, which was first unveiled at NAVDEX 2023.

Canada has signed an agreement with Irving Shipbuilding Inc (ISI) to begin building three new destroyers for C$8 billion (US$5.8 billion). The three River-class destroyers, which will ultimately cost C$22 billion with significant infrastructure costs added, will be based on the BAE Systems Type 26 frigate design being used to refresh the fighting capabilities of the UK’s Royal Navy (RN).
