After the two decades that seem to have passed since the beginning of January, the year is finally coming to an end. The United Nations called 2024 the “super year” of elections — which sounds accurate. It also said that the fact that 3.7 billion voters headed to ballot boxes in 72 countries was synonymous with “strengthening democracy and good governance.” That feels slightly less on the nose. For those of us in Europe, the super season kicked off with mystery. What on earth is a Spitzenkandidat?

AbstractThe ALPK3 gene encodes alpha-protein kinase 3, a cardiac pseudo-kinase of unknown function. Heterozygous truncating variants (ALPK3tv) can cause dominant adult-onset Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Here we confirm an excess of ALPK3tv in sarcomere-gene negative HCM patients. Moreover, we generated a novel knock-in mouse model carrying an ALPK3tv (K201X). Homozygous animals displayed hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction.

When EU voters head to the polls later this week, one thing is certain: Almost none of them will be thinking of Europe when they cast their ballot. A plethora of studies — and sky-high abstention rates — show that most of the bloc’s citizens neither understand nor care about the European Parliament vote. Because of this, they tend to vote based on domestic concerns instead of Brussels politics.

Are you the Nostradamus of the Brussels bubble? While the European Parliament election takes place next week, the real excitement will kick off once the results are announced, with EU countries and leaders maneuvering to get their preferred people into top jobs. Though some gigs have clear front-runners (looking at you, European Commission), nothing is set in stone — and, as 2019 proved, there’s nothing to stop leaders from throwing us all a massive von der Leyen-shaped curveball.
