Fasting during Ramadan forms one of the five obligatory pillars of Islam for individuals who can fast. Observant Muslims will abstain from all food and drink from dawn till sunset each day over the course of a month. Religious exemptions exist, such as to those who are sick, travelling, pregnant, or menstruating.1 Ramadan fasting is widely practised by almost 2 billion Muslims across the globe, primarily for spiritual or cultural reasons.
