A new home, two new businesses launched and, most recently, a new name. It’s been a busy two years for the non-profit organization formerly known as the Iqaluit Humane Society. “We changed our name to Nunavut Animal Rescue because we saw that we’ve been helping with so many communities for so many years, we’re not just the Iqaluit Humane Society” anymore, said board president Janelle Kennedy.

A whooping cough outbreak declared more than five months ago in Kivalliq region has ended. The Department of Health declared the outbreak March 8, with active cases detected in Arviat and Rankin Inlet. In a news release Friday announcing the end of the outbreak, the department said that between March 6 and July 23 there were 32 cases identified in the region, including at the Amaruq mine site, an Agnico Eagle gold mine north of Baker Lake.

When Darlene Nuqingaq learned the first-ever Pan-Northern Youth Fiddle Summit would be held in Whitehorse this year, it was like music to her ears. Young fiddlers from Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories now have an event to meet, learn from each other and perform together. It’s an idea long overdue, she said.

When the Canadian Coast Guard’s two newest polar icebreakers go into service over the next decade, they’ll take to the water bearing Inuktut placenames. The CCGS Arpatuuq will be named for Akpatok Island in Ungava Bay, home to thousands of seabirds, while the CCGS Imnaryuaq’s name refers to an area at the southern end of Banks Island known as “big cliff,” which is culturally significant to Inuvialuit.

Devolution agreement signing in Iqaluit another important step for the territory History was made in Iqaluit Thursday when years of negotiations led to the signing of a devolution agreement between the Government of Nunavut, the federal government and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. The ceremony included speeches, traditional singing and dancing and a lighting of the qulliq before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier P.J. Akeeagok and NTI president Aluki Kotierk signed the documents.
