MY FRIEND BETSY woke me up with the news. No words, just a text linking to the New York Times announcement: “Richard Serra, Who Recast Sculpture on a Massive Scale, Dies at 85.” I read the article with a vague sense of disbelief. “Died at his home in Orient, N.Y., on the North Fork of Long Island.” Pneumonia. No doubt it’s the art historian in me, but my first thought, appropriately enough, was of scale.
