PerspectivePhysiologyThe hepatic vagal nerve mediates the impact of circadian disruption on food intake in miceNoelia Martinez-Sanchez and David Ray Authors Info & AffiliationsAbstractTiming mechanisms have evolved across all kingdoms of life to anticipate daily changes in the light environment and to optimize opportunities for nutrition. In mammals, the central circadian clock in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus synchronizes to external light.

Editor’s summaryThe search for mathematical nets that allow for the design and synthesis of multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been simplified by the enumeration of a few hundred merged nets. Simpler two-component MOFs can be described with edge-transitive nets. Jiang et al. mapped node-net relations among 53 of these basic nets, and the shared features allowed the researchers to identify 353 more complex merged nets with multiple nodes and linkers.

Editor’s summaryWet dog shakes (WDS) define a widespread behavior in hairy animals that is used to remove water and irritants from hairy skin. However, the mechanism triggering WDS remains to be fully elucidated. Using optogenetics and behavioral protocols, Zhang et al. showed in mice that WDS are triggered by Piezo2-mediated activation of unmyelinated C-fiber low-threshold mechanoreceptors synaptically coupled with spinoparabrachial neurons.

Editor’s summaryThree-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with a rare self-penetrated topology have both small pore sizes and ultrahigh surface areas that enable high volumetric storage of methane. Yin et al. used six-connected polyhedra and triangular molecules to create two imine-linked COFs with a pore size of 1.1 nanometers and avolumetric surface area of 1900 square meters per cubic centimeter.
