    By Grace Farrell  A person was declared dead at Tacoma’s Northwest ICE Processing Center (NWIPC) in October, the second death at the migrant detention center this year and the fourth since 2006. The individual was identified as Jose Manuel Sanchez-Castro, a 36-year-old citizen of Mexico. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which oversees the privately-owned facility, has not disclosed the cause of Sanchez-Castro’s death, but the Tacoma Police Department cited natural causes.

    By Grace Farrell  On the weekend of Oct. 18–20, the University of Puget Sound hosted the 40th National Conference on Peer Tutoring and Writing (NCPTW). The annual conference aims to respond to the challenges associated with operating college writing centers and further developing peer tutoring programs across the country.   This year, the largest NCPTW event following the COVID-19 pandemic was held in Tacoma. Attendees included 148 peer tutors from 28 states and two countries–the US and Canada.

University of Puget Sound students have voted at high rates in the past two elections, with 60.2% of eligible students voting in the 2016 election and a record-breaking 84.9% voting in 2020 according to the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement from Tufts University.

    By Grace Farrell   In the past couple years the University’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions has undergone a noticeable shift in their marketing strategy. The Puget Sound Admissions Instagram account was previously pretty formal, but has recently seen posts with a more playful tone. Instead of heavily academic, professional language, captions include jokes and emojis. Videos with memes and tongue-in-cheek content populate their new TikTok page.

    By Grace FarrellAfter 92 years of operating as its own department, the Puget Sound geology program is transitioning to working within the environmental science program. Dr. Kena Fox-Dobbs, department chair, says that changes in staffing and student interests prompted the transition. She explained that only two of the five geology professors at the time of her appointment as chair are still in the program, which makes it difficult to keep a variety of classes operating.
