Sissinghurst Castle Garden is magical. I knew I wanted to garden from a very young age. My family are quite serious naturalists. I always had an interest in art and design, too, and it seems that gardening combines those interests—nature, with the creative endeavor of something that's artistic, such as gardening. I went to Sissinghurst as a visitor when I was 17. I was traveling around England in an old VW camper van looking at gardens.

My antiques and architectural salvage dealing business started almost as a means of recycling. Years and years ago, during a time of major urban development when buildings and structures were being torn down, it seemed so wasteful to be discarding these beautifully crafted 18th- and 19th-century architectural fragments.
