WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s fight to evade extradition from Britain to the United States may be nearing an end, after years of legal challenges. London’s High Court is considering whether the Australia-born activist and whistleblower can further appeal his extradition within the British court system. Hearing took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the judges are expected to make their decision at a later date — possibly weeks, even months later.

Australian chef and restaurateur Bill Granger, who pioneered Aussie brunch culture and elevated avocado toast to widespread popularity, died Dec. 25 at a hospital in London. He was 54. The Melbourne-born chef died peacefully on Christmas Day, with his wife and three daughters by his side, the family said in a statement posted on Instagram. A cause of death was not given.

Authorities in Maine searched overnight for a suspect, 40-year-old Robert Card, in the country’s deadliest mass killing this year. At least 18 people were killed and 13 injured Wednesday night in Lewiston, a town of about 38,000, when a shooter targeted a bowling alley and a bar. Three people were in critical condition Thursday night. Police blared warnings and surrounded a residence in the town of Bowdoin, where Card’s family is from, according to residents, before departing.
