There’s a new billboard stationed off Highway 115, about 15 minutes from the walls of North Wilkesboro Speedway, that sports an advertisement for the May 19 NASCAR All-Star Race at the track. “Rooted here,” the sign reads, in all of its vintage-themed glory.

When Connor Hall was growing up, he revered Nelson Motorsports — and team owner Barry Nelson — as the “Hendrick Motorsports” of the late model world. Nelson’s team has won the late model stock car championship on the CARS Tour three times, in addition to collecting victories at NASCAR’s annual late model race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway and other crown jewels throughout the Southeast.

In 1998, Rodney Childers was at a turning point in his driving career. He was on the brink of becoming a “real race car driver,” ready to transition to full-sized late models after years of competing on the go-kart circuit. “Winning a lot in the go-kart industry is one thing, but when you get in a race car, you need to be able to get it done,” Childers said. “I was just a young kid.”In 1997, Childers ran about five late model races with little to show for it.

Nick Sanchez will lead the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series field to the green flag on Friday night at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. The No. 2 Rev Racing driver was the fastest qualifier on Friday afternoon, logging a 29.288-second lap (167.905 mph) around the 1.366-mile facility. TRICON Garage’s Corey Heim will start beside Sanchez on the front row for the Buckle Up South Carolina 200 after running a 29.436-second lap (167.061 mph) in his No. 11 Toyota.
