A new voice may soon grace the airwaves: The winner of Mediacorp's 987 STAR 2025 competition, final-year psychology studies student from Temasek Polytechnic Georgina Pattarida Dobson. Dobson on Saturday (May 31) beat out the other three finalists – Lex Whitlock, Nicolette Callie Wee and Shaniah Kiew – in a two-hour grand finale to win the S$5,000 cash prize, courtesy of Fisherman's Friend, and a contract with Mediacorp 987.

Learning a new skill that has nothing to do with your day job is the quickest way to be humbled. Museum visits can be semi-intimidating. You listen to a passionate docent tell you about an artefact’s rich history. Then at the end of the tour, they ask: Any questions? You have several. These “true” story contributions, published under the pseudonym Russell Lee, ranged from tales about taxi drivers encountering long-haired female passengers along particular roads to the misadventures of teenagers at beachside chalets.

When Isetan announced it would close its Tampines Mall outlet in November 2025 after almost three decades in operation, it wasn’t just a regular business winding up. It signalled to me the death of the Singaporean shopping mall template I have a love-hate relationship with, where a department store is the anchor tenant. This wasn’t the only change in the past few years to the Singapore I grew up with.
