The icon indicates free access to the linked research on JSTOR. Over 2,500 years ago, Greek philosophers debated whether the nature of reality was impermanence or constant change. Heraclitus was the champion of change, pointing to the march of the seasons and the ebb and flow of the tides. In contrast, Parmenides, a near-contemporary of Heraclitus, claimed that change was illusory and constancy was the rule.

ResultsTwo hundred and twenty-eight surveys were completed. Twenty-eight were excluded for the following reasons: completed by patients (n=23), completed by health professionals not caring for haematological cancer patients (n=4) and completed by a teenage and young adult nurse(n=1). Two hundred surveys were therefore included in the analysis. The participant characteristics of survey responders are summarised in table 1. Twenty-five patients and 10 health professionals were interviewed.
