Heraclitus was the champion of change, pointing to the march of the seasons and the ebb and flow of the tides. In contrast, Parmenides, a near-contemporary of Heraclitus, claimed that change was illusory and constancy was the rule.

Even with too many cars on Main Street and hundreds more people in the grocery stores, summer is a great time to live in Falmouth. We have family get togethers, wonderful beaches, lovely gardens and a relaxed approach to life. There are, however, a few natural things seniors must pay attention to as they age. Sun, heat, insects and poisonous plants take a greater toll on older bodies. Knowledge and planning can mitigate the negative effects of summer living here on Cape Cod.

April 16 to 22 has been set aside by Presidential Proclamation as the week the country will take time to acknowledge and thank friends and neighbors for their volunteer service. Eighty years ago Canada became the first country to celebrate National Volunteer Week during World War II. The United States joined the growing number of nations to set aside a time to honor volunteers who contribute to improving local and national organizations in 1974.

The dictionary defines senior citizens as adults age 65 or older. When “senior” was coined in the 14th century few “seniors” lived to their 60s, not to their 80’s and 90s. Without modern conveniences, medical care and drugs, life would be so limited that few would want to live to old age.
