Australia has suffered another death from a shark after a surfer was bitten in the country’s south, the fourth fatal incident in the region in 18 months. Authorities were still searching for the body of 28-year-old Lance Appleby, who witnesses saw being taken by a shark on 2 January, according to police. Shark bites are often traumatic incidents and in an ocean-loving nation such as Australia, each new one can stoke fears of the marine predators.

The Coalition has revealed further details of its plan to build nuclear reactors in Australia, claiming it could deliver an electricity system costing $263bn less than the Albanese government’s plans to power Australia on renewables backed by storage and gas. The Coalition is relying on Frontier Economics modelling to argue its nuclear vision for seven reactors across the country would be 44% cheaper than the government’s renewables-led plan.
