In the infinite of the universe, we are finite. Or are we? And what does this all have to do with the Ayre KX-8 preamplifier? Put on your tinfoil hats and let’s explore the existential experience and the meaning of life, the universe, and everything–all before you answer “42.”I met up with Jake Forsyth, the Vice President for Ayre Acoustics, at Capital Audiofest 2024. Besides the great conversation, I was curious how Ayre Acoustics was doing as it was one of my favorite brands back in the ‘90s.

Like many endeavors it started as a road trip. I was considering visiting my son in California for Christmas, but we had just gotten together as a family for Thanksgiving in New Orleans. Having lunch with friends one of my more vocal and outgoing friends told me that at a certain age you only have so many trips left in your lifetime. So I took his advise to heart. The first leg was a stop in the Denver Colorado area, so while there why not drop in on YG Acoustics in Arvada?

Like many of you I have, or had, an extensive CD collection. Like many of you I gave away lots of CDs and my CD player a few years ago. But here we are, reviewing the TEAC PD-505T transport – HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!For many years I felt a transport did “what it says on the tin,” as the Brits would say, and never understood why someone would pay big money for a transport. Perhaps a cheap transport to spin discs, rip CDs to a hard drive, etc.

YG Acoustics was out in force at CAF–I wonder if YG stands for “Ya Got rooms?” They had a presence in eight rooms! I know I missed one or two, but there was a solid consistency to the sound despite a variety of sources and amplification. Perhaps my favorite YG Acoustics room included the Vinnie Rossi and a Weiss Helios DAC.

Getting an open baffle design right can be tricky. Many that I’ve heard outside the Treehaus Audiolab’s National Treasure left me less than enthusiastic. However, open baffle designs do a few things especially well. They have air and create a sense of space, which is hard to discount, but they often lack bass. I’ll get to that more in a minute, but first a description. I first heard of Rich Pinto and Treehaus Audiolab at AXPONA a few years ago.
