Of all the position groups on the 49ers, cornerback might be the strongest one. They currently have two good starters at the position: Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green. The 49ers can't say that about many other position groups such as the defensive line which has Nick Bosa and that's about it. And yet, NFL.com's Chad Reuter projects the 49ers to pick Michigan cornerback Will Johnson in Round 1. "The departure of Charvarius Ward leads the 49ers to pick Johnson," writes Reuter.

This year's NFL Draft is a bit peculiar. It's extremely deep with talented players, but it doesn't feature many blue-chip generational prospects. Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter is one. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty might be two. The rest of have flaws. Which means the player who gets drafted fifth might not be much better than the player who gets drafted 25th. That's why teams seem to want to trade down this year.

The Eagles are desperately trying to unload edge rusher Bryce Huff from their roster. Should the 49ers take him off their hands? The Eagles signed Huff last year to a three-year, $51 million contract and he was a flop. No nicer way to put it. He missed five games, started only six, recorded a mere 2.5 sacks and wilted against the run. Now of course they want to move him and his horrendous contract. The 49ers might be interested in Huff.

The 49ers operate differently than most teams during the NFL Draft. Most teams let their scouting department pick the players, while the 49ers seem to empower their coaches to influence decisions in the first few rounds. In the past, Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans had influences on the defensive players the 49ers drafted. Now Saleh is back, and he surely will have a say when it comes to the 49ers' defensive draft picks this year. But Saleh might not stay with the 49ers long.

The 49ers have to start planning for life after George Kittle. Kittle will be 32 in October and he has just one year remaining on his contract. When the season ended, he said he wanted to sign an extension with the 49ers, but that was before they took on more than $80 million in dead cal penalties and let nine starters leave in free agency. Now, their Super Bowl window is closed for at least one year. Maybe Kittle would like an opportunity to win a Super Bowl elsewhere.
