    INTRODUCTION In 2017, during a short course on freediving, I joined a half dozen other students in a sheltered cove off Sydney Harbour. Our instructor, a one-time world record-holder in freediving, chose our location, and we waded in wearing wetsuits, carrying oversized diving fins, weighed down by ballast plates. The course prepared us to dive in competitions or as part of another activity, like spearfishing, surfing, or underwater exploration.

    From my perspective as a neuroanthropologist, some of the best things about anthropology are thrown into high relief by comparing it to related disciplines, especially the human sciences. This commentary discusses developments in psychology since 2010, especially a series of high-profile scandals and the field's broader replication crisis. I do this to better assess what anthropology offers as a discipline.
