If we’re going to ensure the Walla Walla Valley does not become a news desert in the next decade, we need to begin training the next generation of journalists whose roots are here — skilled young journalists committed to the place where they have family and friends. The time to start training those journalists is while they’re still in high school. And there’s nobody better to train local high school journalists than a professional journalist in the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin newsroom.

The Retreat Fire southwest of Naches grew by nearly 4,000 acres in less than 12 hours, the Incident Information System reported Sunday. Meanwhile, state, local and federal agencies plan a Retreat Fire community meeting Monday evening, July 29, at the Naches Valley Elementary School. About noon Saturday, the Incident Information System – also known as Inciweb – put the fire at 18,273 acres. By Sunday morning, the fire had grown to 22,237 acres, Inciweb reported.
