When Terry Turbak returned to St. Joseph, it didn’t take long to decide where to go first. Krug Park occupied a magical place in her childhood memories. Although she moved around while growing up, her thoughts often returned to the 162-acre park with its castle, amphitheater and annual Christmas display. “I have a picture of my mom and dad eating watermelon in the park when they were dating,” Turbak said.

The music plays loud and proud thanks to the behind-the-scenes work of John and Gail Russell. “I think it adds quite a bit for people to hear the patriotic music before and after,” Gail Russell said.

Marcela Almendra Villaseñor Hamilton came to the United States with a husband, a daughter and an international business degree. Unlike her husband, an engineer, she did not come with a work visa. Hamilton’s visa allows her to live and study in the United States, but not to work. That has been St. Joseph’s gain.

When Paula Johnson delivers a meal, she finds that the recipient gets much more than a plate of hot food. “They’re kind of by themselves and kind of lonely,” she said. “That truly is a joy for them, because they get to see someone.”For 10 years, Paula Johnson and her husband, George, have delivered Meals on Wheels for InterServ. In addition, Johnson said she keeps busy decorating the United Methodist Church in Stewartsville.
